As a person who is fat, people consistently feel like they have the right to voice their opinion on your health whether or not they have a medical degree or are even someone who has the right to speak into your life to begin with. Society consistently correlates fatness to negative things such as ugly, unhealthy, or just bad in general. The last thing you ever want to be is fat. There is a whole industry built solely on promising people ways that they can avoid being fat. The reality is we are all individuals and what health, beauty, and joy looks for each of us is different. My cousin, Andrea Catherine, invited me to join her on her podcast exploring this topic. She has a background in Yoga and Health Coaching. We have always been eager to jump into vulnerable conversation with each other, so as we did this podcast it kind of just became one of our usual conversations, just more intentional and guided. I have always valued her opinion and have felt that she accepted me as I was. This topic is no different. Please take sometime to listen to her podcast as I join her in talking about my journey to self love and what that meant for my health. Here is the link for the podcast! Also, if you are interested in the work she does on self love, check out her page here! AND! If you want to join her for her course (which I highly recommend) Click HERE! As always, stay fabulous my loves! -Cherie We always make jokes when Fall hits... here come the leggings, scarfs, and boots. I would say Starbucks but Erin and I ALWAYS have a Starbucks no matter what season it is! I have always loved the comfy basic look of Fall style. It's simple, comfortable, layered, and somehow just looks super put together like "I am so busy that I just threw this together, but I am also so awesome that I somehow look perfect."
But what if being basic isn't an option for you? What if you can never find boots to fit? I have never really been at odds with my chubby legs. They have carried me through life and also keep me somewhat in rhythm on the dance floor. My favorite thing about them is that they are like my mother's legs, so no matter what I get to carry her with me. My least favorite thing is that I can never find knee high boots that fit them. Even when stores carried wide calf boots, I would get all excited and be like this is it! I can feel it! Halfway up, the zipper would get stuck and I would give up. Then, one magical day, I was at work and someone had returned a pair of boots that had an extra wide calf. My heart was racing as I zipped those suckers up. The zipper didn't get stuck, it just kept going till the top! THEY FIT! HOLY MOLY! As of two weeks ago, I bought my first pair of boots and they aren't even knee high, they are thigh high! I get to finally be basic with my leggings, scarf, and BOOTS! A special thanks to Torrid, for carrying extra wide calf boots. Thank you for seeing me. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be basic. Much Love, Cherie At our most recent photo shoot, I had found a pair of overall shorts that I fell in love with! They were a size smaller than what I usually go for, but they were comfortable and when I tried them on I felt like I looked super cute. After Erin took my pictures, I looked through them and all I could see was the cellulite on my legs and the roundness of my belly. Suddenly these overalls weren't as cute as I had thought they were. I kept these thoughts to myself, while Erin of course was pointing out which pictures were her favorite and how she thought I looked really good in them. This prompted me into thinking a lot about what we consider "flattering". Yes, there are clothes that accentuate our bodies and make us look delicious! But, often times we use that term to describe when are able to utilize clothes to hide what we deem our imperfections which is usually our fatness. I mean, what is a usual question you hear in fitting rooms: Does this make me look fat? In this case, some would say my overalls aren't very flattering because they tighten and show the shape and fullness of my belly and I am exposing my thick and bumpy legs. You know what though? It doesn't matter. My belly and my legs are parts of my body and I shouldn't be ashamed of how they are shaped. I am grateful for them. My legs have carried me through this life, they've been held onto by many little kids, they've stretched with me while I do yoga, they have given me the ability to explore nature, they are very similar to my mother's legs and I absolutely love my mother and am grateful that her body is reflected in my own. My belly has brought me connection to people, it has been a soft comfort to those who have cried on me while I play with their hair, or has shaken with laughter during late night talks and goofiness. Both my legs and my belly are precious to me no matter what form they take. When I see them, those are the things I should see and I should not be ashamed of that or want to hide that. So, I've looked at the pictures again, appreciating my curves, my belly, my legs, and my great taste because that is a stinking cute outfit! I get asked a lot about my confidence or people tell me they wish they had the confidence that I had. When they ask me for advice on how to build their own confidence, I always tell them, you just have to decide to do it. Put that outfit on that you love but are worried about what people might say. WEAR IT. Wear it and know you look good. Do it, because if you don't, you'll be stuck here hating yourself. So, when I have these moments where I look at my pictures and I see all those things that I am working on loving myself for, I stop and think about why I am grateful for my body and then I put on that outfit that I was worried about and I WERK IT.
Forever and always, stay fabulous!! Much Love, Cherie and Erin Summertime is my absolute favorite! Something about warm nights, fireflies, watching thunderstorms roll in, that sun-kissed glow, swimming, and showing more skin just makes the world feel all of the sudden magical! This is also the time of year that for some reason, a lot of people like to tell others what to wear and what not to wear. Never fear! We are here to tell you to show those arms! Show those legs! Show that belly! I know for some this is a process, and that's okay. You got this! When you are trying something new, don't forget to look at yourself in the mirror and tell yourself that you're beautiful! Here are some fun looks that we are loving so far this summer: Short shorts with fun details! Erin got these cute shorts from Torrid. They have a beautiful lace detail at the bottom. The most important thing about shorts is finding the right fit for you. Torrid is great in that they provide a variety of lengths so you can figure out which length lands at the best spot for you. This pair that Erin is wearing in particular have a 3 inch inseam. And as always, make sure they fit just right around the booty! SInce the shorts have such cute detail, Erin paired them with a simple white shirt so that the main focus would be the detail of the shorts. Keeping things cheap is important so you have more money for summer activities! This top I found at a thrift store! Thrifting can be hard at times for plus size women because, well, it's hard to find clothing in our sizes anyways, but then to find it second hand... forget it! But, it is worth it to dig or glance every once in a while because you have the potential to find a cute piece! The great thing about buying from thrift stores for the summer is that the clothes are so cheap that you 1. Can use the money you save on fun things to do and 2. Since the clothes were so cheap you can look cute and not care if you get them muddy or accidentally tear them in the midst of your summer fun. My advice when thrifting is to 1. Try things on that aren't your size- you NEVER know! and 2. Be creative- you can always cut things or wear things differently than they were made to be worn. Remember, it's totally okay to break the rules.... I am giving you permission to break the rules! Make this summer magical for you! Wear what you want and do what you want! Let us know what fashion rules you are breaking this summer! Don't forget to follow us in Instagram if you don't already! @thickfunfabulous And, as always, stay fabulous!!! <3 Cherie and Erin We know of a secret Bamboo Forrest and of course, we had to do a photo shoot! This morning was so much fun! We grabbed a Starbucks and worked it! More Spring outfits! Spring is all about the layers on layers on layers! Sheer, long dusters are very popular right now and you can pair them with a variety of other clothing items like dresses, jeans, shorts. Cherie's outfit is shown with 2 different tops just to give you some variety. (Outfit details: Crop top in top picture: Charlotte Rousse; Tank Top in bottom picture: Target; Jeans: Torrid; Duster: Burlington Coat Factory; Boots: Ross) They are a great addition to almost any outfit to add a little color or spice. They are also a lot of fun to twirl in! :) Erin is showcasing a comfy outfit with some killer shoes! Jeans with lots of destruction are once again popular and are often casual but can be dressed up with a pair of cute heels and a pretty necklace. (Outfit details: Top: Old Navy, Jeans: Forever 21 plus, Shoes: Journey's, Necklace: Love Poppy) When you pick out your clothes don't forget to make sure that you are comfortable and YOU feel good in them. Fashion is great, but if you aren't happy in what you are wearing, it's not worth it! We would love to hear from you all! What are some spring looks that you are loving this year? What kind of styles would you like us to explore next? Have a fun week and stay fabulous! I was standing, staring at myself in the mirror. My eyes traced my body and stopped at my belly. I was wearing a crop top which I had worn many times before but today I was wearing it with a pair of jeans. I felt like I looked cute but I couldn't get past looking at my belly because I have been told by people, by society that if that part of my body isn't flat, it isn't beautiful. I took a picture and sent it to my fellow body positive buddy and basically said "HELP!" I just needed some encouragement to go for an outfit that I already knew I looked cute in. I left the house in that outfit, went to the Zoo where I got many compliments and felt like I was FIRE! (Outfit Details:Crop top: Rue 21 Plus; Black Jeans: Lane Bryant; Bomber Jacket: Burkes Outlet; Shoes: Ross) I share this little story because I have been told many times that they see me as someone who is full of confidence and it's important to show that loving your body is a journey, it takes encouragement, and sometimes you need back up! In the end, it's worth it because as you take steps to wear something that might be scary to you, you realize, hey that wasn't that big of a deal and hey I look GOOD! That was my first day in Nashville and I spent the rest of the weekend working my outfits with pride! After getting over the bump of wearing a crop top with jeans, It did not matter to me that my rolls were showing, something else I kept trying to cover up, especially in pictures. The main thing I learned this weekend: Beauty is found when you begin to own and love who you are, just the way you are. (Outfit details: Hat: Torrid; Bralette: Torrid; Top: Rue 21 Plus; Black Jeans: Lane Bryant; Shoes: Ross) So, babes, when was the last time you wore something that you loved but it scared you a little bit? What have you done recently to show yourself some love?
Don't forget to follow us on Instagram @thickfunfab !!!! Stay Fun and Fabulous! We had such a fun day enjoying the Spring weather and watching Beauty and the Beast! The weather has finally started to warm up and we are getting so excited for Spring! It is East Tennessee though, so you never know when it will suddenly turn cold again. Erin and I have jumped right into some flowy stripes to welcome this awesome weather! Here, Erin is showing off her off the shoulder maxi dress/shirt with a high slit that she actually found on Ebay combined with some cropped jeans that she got from Old Navy. Some styles to note that are big for this Spring and Summer: showing those shoulders! You probably have already seen a lot of peek-a-boo shoulder shirts in stores, as well as a lot of off the shoulder styles. Cropped jeans are currently also popular. You can buy them already cropped or you can roll up some skinny or boyfriend jeans you already own! You'll notice that she is also showing off her bralette from Aerie, which will work with off the shoulder style shirts as well as spicing up a t-shirt. Cherie (me!) has a knee length flowy skirt she found at Ross with a simple crop top she got from Charlotte Russe. Since it is Spring, layers are great for staying warm once the day cools off. Cherie has on an olive green bomber jacket she got from Belk. This outfit takes some classic pieces like skirts and crops, and mixes them with something trendy-the bomber jacket. If you love crop tops and are nervous to try them, I would encourage you to try it first with a high waist skirt. It shows just a bit of skin and where it lands is basically flattering on anybody. How do you style your stripes? What outfits are you wearing to transition into Spring? Post your comments and pictures below. Don't forget to follow us on Instagram @thickfunfabulous!
